Femtosecond Lasers: The Latest Breakthrough in Cataract Surgery

The latest breakthrough in modern cataract surgery is the development of femtosecond lasers, used to assist the cataract surgeon in performing the procedure. Many people over the years have thought that lasers could be used to remove cataracts, and now the technology has reached a point that it can become common use.

The new laser technology can be used to fashion the surgical incision, as well as astigmatism-correcting incisions on the cornea of the eye. The laser can also be used to make a consistently round and well-centered lens capsular opening, as well as soften the cataract itself, making the removal of it quicker and less traumatic. Although cataract surgery, as it stands now, is a low-risk and highly successful procedure, the laser technology will continue to better the consistency of surgical results.
