Thursday November 17 is the 36th Great American Smokeout – A nationally recognized event that challenges people to stop using tobacco and raises awareness of the many effective ways to quit for good!

The American Academy of Ophthalmology states that there is a direct link between smoking and eye problems and eye diseases.

By smoking you increase your risk for developing:

Cataracts

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

Optic neuropathy

Diabetic retinopathy

Thyroid eye disease (Graves’ disease)

Dry eyes

Glaucoma

For non-smokers this is a great time to “adopt” a smoker! Support them as they go through the day by keeping them busy! The Great American Smokeout remains a wonderful opportunity to encourage people to commit to making a long-term plan to quit for good.

For more information contact www.cancer.org/smokeout or call 1-800-227-2345.

Many children (and adults) look forward to dressing up as their favorite character or superhero on Halloween. Choosing from the thousands of costumes out there can make for a giant headache before you even eat a piece of candy!

Keep your little Trick-or-Treaters safe on this spooky candy-filled evening by following some very simple tips!

Dress children in light-colored costumes or adhere reflective tape to the costume’s fabric and accessories.

Avoid costumes with masks or eye patches that block vision. If your child insists on being Spiderman and you are not a Hollywood make-up artist, make the holes for the eyes bigger to ensure they can see the webs they are spinning!

Carry a bright flashlight to improve visibility and allow others to see you. Even better, go trick or treating in daylight!

Hypoallergenic make-up is a safer alternative. Take care in keeping make-up away from the eyes and be careful when removing it at the end of the evening.

Leave home the wands, swords, spears and other pointed props that might harm other children’s eyes.

Only approach doorsteps that have a porch light lit.

If cosmetic contact lenses are part of your costume, make sure you obtain them from your optometrist to ensure that the lenses fit your eyes properly. DO NOT SHARE CONTACT LENSES!!!

Alternatives to Trick-or-Treating include:

“Trunk or Treat”

Community Festivals

Local Malls

*Check dates of these events – some may be done on the weekend prior to Halloween!

REMEMBER:

If you plan on passing out treats, be sure to turn on your porch or other outdoor light!

The last day to enter Kelly Eye Center’s Ugly Glasses Contest is next Thursday, Dec. 9, so there’s a little over one week left! The earlier you enter, the better, because you’ll need time to get votes on your entry.

So how does the contest stand right now? We’ve got 11 (hilarious) entries, with these three in the lead:

Poor Petry – 183 votes

Emily Dunlay – 59 votes

Karley Litaker – 24 votes (with Dan Keegan’s 21 votes gaining on her!)

Remember, the three entries with the most votes will become our three finalists to win the prizes. And these prizes are awesome, if we do say so ourselves! Here they are:

1st place prize: Free Lasik surgery, courtesy of Kelly Eye Center

2nd place prize: Free contacts for a year

3rd place prize: A free pair of Maui Jim sunglasses

So post your entry soon, and invite your friends and family to vote for you. May the ugliest glasses win!

Florence Henderson, known for her role as Carol Brady on the Brady Bunch, got booted from Dancing with the Stars on Monday. But she’s still seeing a lot of success, as a spokesperson for Bausch & Lomb and their Crystalens solution for cataracts. Here’s one of the videos from the campaign:

Henderson underwent Crystalens surgery in 2009 and has been raving about it ever since, so she was Bausch & Lomb’s natural choice to promote the procedure.

Crystalens is an FDA-approved intraocular lens (IOL) that treats the cataract while also correcting the patient’s full range of vision. Henderson says that since her cataract surgery, she has noticed a marked improvement in her eyesight, noting brighter colors and improved sharpness and clarity of vision.

Cataract surgery is one of the most common and safest surgeries available. To learn more about Crystalens and other solutions for cataracts, feel free to give Kelly Eye Center a call. Our Raleigh cataract specialists are happy to speak with you about the various options available for patients with cataracts.

The latest breakthrough in modern cataract surgery is the development of femtosecond lasers, used to assist the cataract surgeon in performing the procedure. Many people over the years have thought that lasers could be used to remove cataracts, and now the technology has reached a point that it can become common use.

The new laser technology can be used to fashion the surgical incision, as well as astigmatism-correcting incisions on the cornea of the eye. The laser can also be used to make a consistently round and well-centered lens capsular opening, as well as soften the cataract itself, making the removal of it quicker and less traumatic. Although cataract surgery, as it stands now, is a low-risk and highly successful procedure, the laser technology will continue to better the consistency of surgical results.

Three different laser companies are now competing for the surgeons’ favor in providing femtosecond lasers. So look forward to a day soon when most cataract surgeries will be done with the assistance of laser technology!
